Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to simplify the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, calling it a “Diwali Dhamaka” that will benefit every section of society and boost the economy.
Ahead of the implementation of the new GST slabs from Monday, Shinde praised the reform as a “masterstroke” that would spur consumption, production, and employment. “There were four slabs in the GST. He removed two slabs, leaving only two. This decision is truly revolutionary for the common man, the middle class, women, farmers, traders, small shopkeepers—everyone. Daily necessities have been made much cheaper. This is a life-changing decision,” Shinde said.
He urged the opposition to welcome the move, stressing that it was designed for the welfare of 140 crore Indians.
Prime Minister Modi, in his address to the nation, underlined that reforms are a continuous process that must adapt to evolving national needs. He explained that under the new structure, only two slabs—5% and 18%—will remain, making most essential items more affordable.
Food items, medicines, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and health and life insurance are among the goods and services that will now either be tax-free or attract only 5% tax. Nearly 99% of items earlier taxed at 12% have been moved into the lower 5% bracket.
Calling the reform both people-centric and forward-looking, Shinde said it would ease the financial burden on households while stimulating economic growth.
